THE NEXT MORNING, Kendall did not want to get out of bed—she felt too horrible.
Her sisters did their best to comfort her until she managed to pull herself from underneath the covers.
“Come,” Sarah encouraged. “You’ll feel better after you have some food.”
“I’m not hungry,” Kendall told them.
Meghan stared at her. “Kendall, you get out of that bed. If you spend all day wallowing in self-pity, then you’re letting that awful girl win.”
Kendall sat up. “You’re right. Come and help me with my dress.”
She threw off the blankets and climbed out of bed so they could start helping her change. After quickly lacing up one of her gowns and raking a comb through her hair, she went with them to the kitchens. The cook was delighted to see them and sent out bannocks and fruit to break their fast.
Lady Morgana walked up to them. “Good Morrow, ladies! Do you mind if I join you?”
“Not at all, I would appreciate the company,” Kendall said.
The girl settled into one of the chairs across from her and smiled. “Will you be taking part in the flower weaving later? I love collecting them from the gardens.”
Kendall grinned, taking a bite from her bannock. “That sounds like fun, but I’ll have to think about it.”
“I will!” Meghan told her eagerly. “You’ll have to let me know when it begins.”
As they prattled on about the flowers, Kendall finished her meal and heard a pair of footsteps walking up behind them. She was about to turn around when Morgana’s face lit up. “Good day, Leo.”
Kendall glanced over her shoulder to see him grin at her. “Hello, little sister. I wish that I could stay, but unfortunately, I’m here to collect Lady Kendall. Our fathers have sent me to summon her to the solar.”
“The solar? Whatever for?”
Leonidus shrugged. “I’m not sure. They haven’t told me anything except to come collect you.”
“Well, then I guess we shouldn’t keep them waiting,” Kendall responded with a heavy sigh.
After casting an apologetic glance to Morgana and her sisters, she turned to go. Together, they walked back down the narrow corridor and up the stairs toward the solar. The stone walls of the castle were embellished with the family crest and tapestries hanging from the rafters.
With every step, Kendall felt her heartbeat quicken. Why would Lord De Wolfe and her father summon her? Something wasn’t right, she could feel it in her bones.
Part of her already knew the reason, or at least suspected—the invitation to Rule Water Castle was no coincidence.
Leonidus approached the door and knocked, then a voice called out to them from inside. “Enter.”
He opened the door at his father’s invitation and let Kendall go in first. She gazed in and quickly realized it was not just Lord De Wolfe and her father that were waiting for her, but also Caius and Lady Isabeau. Kendall’s eyes grew large as she stared at all of them in shock. “Good day, milord. I was told you wanted to see me?”
“Greetings, Lady Kendall,” Lady De Wolfe addressed her with a smile.
